Here are some FAQ's that many people have regarding dissolution.
Is dissolving a village legal?
Yes! There is currently a statewide initiative underway to encourage local governments to consolidate or dissolve altogether.

Are any other communities considering dissolution or consolidation?
Yes! Several communities in New York are already considering proposals, including:
Norwich http://www.evesun.com/news/stories/2007-09-21/2703/Spitzer-wants-Norwich-governments-to-consider-merger/
Macedon http://www.gflrpc.org/Publications/CEDS/2002-03/DistrictOverview.pdf See the bottom of Page 10 for information.
Village of Macedon Consolidation Study In the winter of 2001, the Village Board of Macedon was approached concerning the initiation of a possible study to determine the costs and benefits of consolidation with the Town of Macedon. State officials were invited to a public meeting to provide resources and information useful in a potential study. Sufficient interest was raised to lead to the Village Board taking action to initiate consolidation/dissolution study. G/FLRPC staff worked with the Town and Village of Macedon to complete the Village of Macedon Consolidation Study.

Will we lose our local identity?
No! Earlville can still maintain "Hamlet" status, much like Poolville or Hubbardsville, and the Post Office will still bear the name "Earlville"
Will the water system be abandoned?
No! You already pay for the water system when you pay your bill. That money could instead go to a "Water district" which would control and maintain the water system for us once the village government is gone.
The Village already must go through the process of creating a Water District to maintain and replace the lines located outside of the village. The water district could be expanded to maintain the water mains within the former village limits.
Will the Earlville Fire Department be shut down?
No! The fire department would be turned into a "Fire Protection District" which would be a seperate entity from the village government, similar to the South New Berlin and Hubbardsville Fire Departments. Local Fire/EMS protection would continue.
Who will maintain the village streets?
The surrounding towns that each street falls under would take over street maintenence. For example, Taylor Ave. would be maintained by the Town of Sherburne, and Chenango Ave. would be maintained by the town of Hamilton.

Please note: These are only draft proposals for continuing village services. The finalized proposals will be included in the "Dissolution Plan" once it is drafted.
